Colour went back to black as dressing turned dark for winter. Sheer, lace and leather adds interest to the new gothic without going too dramatic. Versace sent models down the catwalk heavily adorned in black velvet and embellished crucifixes and Gucci wowed with beautiful sheer pieces, making sure models were suitably dressed for when the sun goes down.

Folklore is one of the biggest trends to emerge for this season. Imagine a bohemian type on a winter road trip through Northern and Eastern Europe, building a wardrobe as she goes. Embroidery, fur, chunky knits, velvet and winter florals all form the basis of this polished modern folk look. An outfit topped off with a fur Cossack hat adds the perfect finishing accent.

Manhattan Lady takes us back to 1950's New York. Feminine shapes ruled the roost at Dior and Oscar De La Renta where everything exuded Stepford Wives perfection. A-line skirts, Peter Pan collars and shrunken knits for the winter season, layered under knee length jackets that come styled perched on the shoulders. It's clean, it's ladylike and it's so Upper East Side! A perfect poise and well applied lipstick are essential.

Inspired by the 18th-century Rococo art movement this season's most decadent trend embodies a dark sided sophistication with gold embellishments and rich textures. Swirling, intricate patterns in lace and velvet with sheer panelling creates a sexy evening look. Dolce and Gabbana, Erdem and Stella McCartney all went a bit Baroque and Roll for the AW12/13 season.

The winter collections were a magpie's haven! From Louis Vuitton to Dior, evening wear rocked heavy metal embellishments that glistened under the bright lights. Nothing says night time femininity like an eye catching, bejewelled dress. From a mass of brooch looking adornments and high shine beads to large sequins, if it shines, you'll shine.
