The oil is derived from the needles and twigs of the tree. Cypress essential oil is thought to calm intense emotions like anger, making it helpful during times of major life changes. This oil works as a vasoconstrictor, aiding in conditions like varicose veins and haemorrhoids. It is also beneficial for managing excess fluid conditions such as heavy menstruation, excessive sweating, cough, bronchitis, haemorrhage, and fluid retention. Cypress essential oil helps soothe muscular cramps, regulate the menstrual cycle, and alleviate arthritis and rheumatic pain. It can be used in a vaporizer to calm the mind and assist with respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, and whooping cough. When diluted, it can be applied in a cold compress to stop nosebleeds. The cypress tree holds a special place in Greek mythology as a symbol of mourning and is often found in cemeteries. It is linked to Hades, the god of the underworld. Historically, the Phoenicians and Cretans used its wood for building ships and houses, while the Egyptians crafted sarcophagi from it, and the Greeks carved statues of their gods from it. Legend has it that the cross of Jesus Christ was made from cypress wood, further solidifying its connection to death. Ironically, the botanical name Sempervirens comes from the Greek term meaning "live forever."
