The entire plant releases a strong, aromatic fragrance. Often referred to as Spanish Wild Marjoram, this plant is a wild-growing variety of thyme, not to be confused with sweet or French Marjoram, nor oregano, which is also sometimes called wild marjoram. Spanish marjoram oil is valued for its effectiveness as an expectorant for respiratory issues, offering antiseptic properties for the upper respiratory tract. Unlike sweet marjoram, it is not a muscle relaxant or sedative. In aromatherapy, it blends well with lavender and bergamot oils, creating a relaxing atmosphere. When used in an oil burner or massage oil, it is believed to soothe the nerves, combat feelings of loneliness and rejection, and support digestion. Spanish wild marjoram has been used since ancient Greece, where it was employed by herbalists for its healing properties. It was also a symbol of love, honour, and happiness in Roman and Greek wedding ceremonies, where couples were crowned with marjoram wreaths. Additionally, marjoram tea with honey was a go-to remedy for preserving the voices of singers.
